Splattering for CAS Mix Up

It's CAS Mix Up time.

Welcome to Adventures in Splattering!

My dear and very talented friend, Loll is hosting the challenge this month.

I used stamping, splattering, watercoloring, Distress Crayons, die cuts

Now splattering can be tricky.
And it's lots of fun to see where some of those splatters land!

But first I stamped these pretty blooms with archival ink.

I was playing with Nance (Soul Stampin') that day
and I had taken my Distress Crayons.

I scribbled the yellow crayon on a fancy palette (the stamp case)
and added a little water with my Aqua Painter.
The crayon doesn't dissolve in the water like paint,
but eventually it was in liquid form.
And what a gorgeous shade of yellow!!!!

I added some orange (colors below) toward the center of the flowers
and finished off  by coloring the stems and center with Distress Markers.

I did the wash after I got home.  I was so busy yakking that I was
afraid to do that there.

After everything was dry, I smooshed some black paint on
another fancy palette (laminated cardstock),
held my breath and splattered.

I actually hit the paper in a few spots!

My table was covered in lovely black spots too.

Fortunately I'd moved most everything off the table.

I probably should add that I masked the flowers while I splattered.
Knowing how splatters fly, I was hesitant to take a chance
on my aim.

I've been told that the best way to splatter is to use a cardboard box.

Doesn't sound as exciting to me.  But maybe I'll try to find one next time.

I do love the look of the splatters though.  At least this time!

Do check out the CAS Mix Up challenge site.
The Design Team and our Guest Designer Elaine,
have awesome inspiration for you.

There's some links to good splattering tutorials too,

  1. Yes, Bonnie...splatters can have a mind of their own. I guess the best tip is..cover your work area at least with plastic (I use a plastic bag, if I remember in time). Also 2nd tip...mask your main image unless you want the splatters. I LOVED how your splattering turned out on your beautiful flower card. I need to try your crayon watercoloring technique. TFS and always inspiring us my friend. Hugs...
P.S. I have also finally learned that close up splatters make bigger splatters and farther away make smaller splatters.

  2. Beautiful card, my friend! Love how you've used the distress crayons. I have a couple of packs, but have not found a way to use them that works for me, yet! Will try you way ... thanks for the tip. I love the black splatter on your card. Ties everything together perfectly. I'm with you about splattering ... I try to control, but it's not always possible. I have learned to take everyone off the desk that doesn't need to be there for safety's sake. :) xx

  3. Very pretty card Bonnie! Love the beautiful blooms and your entire card. I'm just not able to ever get the splatters right and they usually end up all over the desk, other cards, and the floor! I haven't figured out the trick to that one at all.

  8. Love this beautiful sunshine card! It's really cheery with those bright yellow blooms and that pretty blue sky behind them Bonnie my friend! Your splatters look wonderfully controlled to me, mine always end up so uneven, with large, funny shaped splatters, always where I don't want them, but I usually just go with it! The black and white bakers twine ties it all in nicely (no pun intended) ;) Have a wonderful day my friend! Love & Hugs. Hazel xx

  11. My desk is frequently hit by splatters and sometimes I forget to clear everything off! Masking is also important!! I've never been able to get splatters exactly where I want them! Love your card - the blue with the deep yellow is such a beautiful colour combination. And the stitched edge die cuts go perfectly with the stitched lines on the flowers!

  12. I adore these yellow stitched daisies Bonnie and the lovely yellow layering and the blue background is so pretty with the nice subtle spattering. The baker's twine works well as the finishing touch too. x

  13. Your black splatters landed perfectly! I find it sometimes not so fun to see where they land like when there is a big splotch where I don't want it, like the other day... But I do like the splattered look - it adds so much interest! Your sunny flowers are a welcome sight on this dreary and rainy day!

  14. Beautifully done, Bonnie! I'm totally addicted to splatters--makes me feel artistic which I'm so not! I just use my old fashioned laundry tub--couldn't be in a house without one--haha! I put my card in a plastic packaging lid & splatter to my heart's content with no worries about the ink.

  15. What a beautiful card Bonnie and perfect splatters! I get a little carried away too and usually have splatters everywhere but where I really want them! A box is a good idea...I'll have to try that! Love the colors of this card too...there's something so crisp and clean about yellow, black and white...love it!! :0)

  17. I do love what splattering adds to a card. This one is lovely, Bonnie. I do have a box to do my splattering in but forget about it when the time comes so I have paint everywhere. One time I wondered what all the white dots were on my fingernails. :)

  19. I also love this yellow shade and gentle gradation of color into the center of the flowers. It looks great. The blue background makes me feel like you were lying on the meadow and took a picture of flowers against the sky ... Spring in fullness :-)
