Salty Marigold or is it a Dahlia

Hello dear friends.

Here's another sample of salt play and a reminder that there's still time to enter at
CAS Watercolour.

I covered a piece of watercolor paper with a wash of yellows using my
Gansai Tambi watercolors.

While it was still quite wet, I sprinkled some Himalayan Fine Pink salt in a couple of areas.

I just used a pinch and tried to keep it in a small section.

To my surprise, it looked like a couple of flowers when it dried!

I probably couldn't do this again but that's what's fun about using salt on watercolor.

You never know how it's going to look!

I used a water soluble marker to outline the lighter "petals".

The background piece used as a mat was done using the same colors of paint and table salt.

I've covered most of it up so you can't really see much of the pattern left from the salt.

Sorry I didn't get a photo of the piece before I cut it up.

I'll try to do better next time.

this month is

The challenge is open until the 24th.

  4. This might be random Bonnie but it is so pretty and I love that bright yellow and the more orangy shade too, and that definitely looks like a gorgeous dahlia, one of those large prize blooms where the petals all turn up towards the centre and I love the white layer in between the two yellow layers which keeps your eye fixed on that salty image. x

  14. This is really cool looking and does look like an abstract flower. I vote marigold. Does Pink Himalayan Salt give a different look than other rock salts?

  16. Beautiful tone on tone, with these sunny colors. This salt is a new product to me! It certainly made a lovely flower image with the salt. I've not had a great deal of success just using kosher salt...but this is pretty! TFS

  20. I thought you used a flower stamp before I read your blog. Amazing how the salt effect works! The Marigold/Dahlia is sooo beautiful, and I love that you used only one color for the flower and the background. Hideko

  21. That does look like a gorgeous flower, Bonnie. Too bad there's not much control with the salt. But then again that's part of the charm of the technique.

  22. That is why I love watercolor so much because the final effect is unique and sometimes difficult to predict. Your flower that was born accidentally is amazing. I love such surprises, which sometimes give me a fate :-))
