Sweet Puppies

I was in a quandary.  The OLW challenge this week was to use a cat or dog on a card.  Yikes!  I don't have any cat or dog stamps!  I have some mice and thought of putting the mouse with the cat out of the picture, but I didn't really think I could get away with that! 

Then I remembered a blog I had visited a while back.  This very talented gal, Torico, draws beautifully and has some free digis on her blog.  I checked it out and found these sweet puppies.  Who could resist?  She also has some adorable digis for sale on Etsy.  Here's a link to Torico's blog.  Go ahead and take a look.  You'll be glad  you did!

Aren't these little guys so sweet? Torico colored hers much better in blonde shades.  I had a problem with the ink smudging.  Evidently the Stampin' Up! card stock doesn't accept the ink from my printer very well.  Hence, we have a litter of gray puppies instead of black & white.  I colored them with Prismacolor pencils and blended with odorless turpentine and cotton swabs.  The sentiment stamp is a renegade that was hiding in my drawer.

The F4A challenge at SCS today is a Free for All, literally.  We could do anything on a card as long as there's something that's free.  This stamp qualifies.  Yippee!

Mixed Up Hydrangea

When I was trying to decide what stamp set to use for the Color Challenge on SCS (Baja Breeze, Soft Suede & Perfect Plum), I thought of the hydrangea in the Because I Care set.  My blue hydrangeas turned into a blue/purple color.  Kind of like this...

I used Carly's layout from this card.  She's the Featured Stamper at SCS this week.  I reversed the layout, used a different stamp and sentiment and different colors.

I stamped the hydrangea in Perfect Plum then went back with the blender pen and Baja Breeze ink to color some of the petals.  Using the blender pen roughs up the paper some, so I smacked it with the VersaMark ink and clear embossed it, then cut out the flower head and adhered it above the stamped stem.  (The stem was stamped off twice before stamping on the card.)  The embossing brightens up the colors a bit.

This was my sixth try.  After the third mess up, I swore only one more.  Then I would get another idea and try again.  I didn't like this at first, but after looking at it a couple of days, I like it better.  I hope you like it.

Blogger continues to keep me from commenting.  It seems to be stuck on making me sign in when I'm already signed in.  I see on the Internet that others are having the same problem.  I appreciate the ones who have been leaving comments and wonder how you are getting around this mess.  I hate it when they try to "improve" something that works and it just gets worse!  I know my hubby is getting sick of hearing me yell at the computer!

Peach Meadow

Another card from my trusty Pocket Sihouettes.

I'll be sending this to the jac-inks challenge site to use WARM colors.  These friends are in Australia and it's Autumn there.  I understand that they're getting a taste of Winter in their Fall.  Here in NC we are getting a taste of Summer in our Spring.  It's been in the 90°'s for 3 days now!  At least the humidity is low and I am ever so thankful for air conditioning!

The Free 4 All challenge at SCS last Friday was to use opposite colors of the color wheel.  Now, I'm going to admit to you that the whole color wheel thing confuses me.  My system is to lay colors together and if it doesn't make my eyes hurt, it's probably ok.  Not very scientific is it?

I used the Orange-Yellow and Blue-Violet.  It really made a hot warm card didn't it?

Maybe it will warm those Aussie's up a bit or at least make them feel cozy.

Butterfly Garden

I combined 4 challenges today.  I don't usually get that many challenges in since I like to keep my cards clean & simple.  But I think I got them all in and still kept to my goal.

The layout is from this card made by the SCS Featured Stamper, Carly.  Her gallery name is PaperInBloom.  I love her clean and simple style!  I flipped the card, changed the images and colors and used a butterfly instead of a button.

This also qualifies for the Stamping Up Only challenge to do a card with May Flowers.

And the Friday Mashup is Ribbon or Pearls and All Things Girls.

Finally, I will send this to the Less is More Challenge to do a card with Butterfly/Butterflies.  Yeah, I know I've already done one with this challenge, but I'd like to share this one too.

Fifth Avenue and Bling

Today's card is for a new to me challenge that I've seen the link to on some of my friend's blogs.  It's called CAS-ual Fridays.  You know me, I'm a CAS kind of gal so I had to check it out.  This week's challenge is to put bling on a card.  I  can handle that!

The layout is from this week's CAS challenge at SCS is to do a card  inspired by a sketch by Regina.  (You can see her card on the bottom of the CAS challenge link.)

I tried to use decorative paper, I really did and then went with my Square Lattice Embossing Folder.  I hope you aren't getting sick of seeing it, because I seem to keep pulling it out.

The flowers are some that I embossed and watercolored some time ago.  They were stamped with Whisper White on Shimmery White cardstock then heat embossed.  I used the Aquabrush and reinker to paint the flowers with Melon Mambo then cut them out.  I tried several ideas for the strip but settled on a piece of So Saffron ribbon with a scrap of DSP over the top.  So I did get some decorative paper in!

Kissed Butterflies

Oh, what a busy weekend, but I did get a chance to check out the Less is More challenge yesterday.  I made a couple of cards for the challenge last night and I've got a few minutes to get them loaded before I'm off and running again.  Whew, retirement is a busy way of life!

Anyway, the Less is More challenge #16 is to put a Butterfly or Butterflies on our card.  I had lots of butterflies on my cards last week and wanted to do something a bit different for this, so I dug into the stamp drawer.   Here is what I came up with.

I used the "kissing technique" on these butterflies.  First I inked the stamp with Rich Razzleberry then I "kissed" the stamp with the uninked little flower in this set.  It removes the ink where it "kisses"and leaves a little pattern.

The Stamp-a-ma-jig was a big help in lining up these little flutterbys. After I had them stamped, I used the Black SU Marker to color in the body and antennae.

Then I wondered how they'd look in yellow...

This is a little more casual looking and I love the black, yellow and white together.  I probably should have left off the spritzing though.  Sometimes less is more!

Inspired by Joanne

Today, Joanne, aka sleepyinseattle, is Queen for the Day at SCS.  I have been a fan of Joanne's versatile style for quite some time.  My biggest problem was deciding which of her cards to CASE!  I chose this one.

Here's mine.....

I didn't use the blended pencil technique.  I should have, but I inked this with markers and changed the colors.  I used a different butterfly too.  The butterfly is stamped with black then smacked with VersaMark and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.

Color and Emboss

I did this card last week but didn't get a chance to show it to you.  I used this technique that Joan shared with us for the Technique Lover's Challenge.  Basically, you color your embossing folder before you emboss your design.

I used the colors from last week's color challenge, also at SCS.  The colors were Blushing Bride, Certainly Celery and So Saffron with White or Vanilla.  We could add a flower for dessert.

I used the new Flower Garden Embossing folder.  You can find it on page 24 of the Summer Mini catalog.  I used markers to color the debossed side of the folder and ran it through the BIG GUY.  I touched it up a bit with the markers and a blender pen since the colors were so light that they didn't show up well.  To do it again, I would use much brighter colors.

This card is a little larger than normal. It measures 4 1/2" x 6 3/8" and fits in the large envelopes that Stampin' Up! used to sell.  I wish they still sold them.  I really like this size.

I've been busy making baby thank you notes for DD Baby Shower this weekend.  I find that they're a welcome gift for the expectant mother. They're almost finished and I'm hoping to get a chance to stamp for fun tomorrow.

Baby Cakes

The One Layer Wednesday Challenge is hosted by Susan this week.  She linked us to a site called Cake Wrecks; Sunday Treats for Mom.  I chose these cookies for inspiration.

Actually, I think I would like it better without the onsies.  But once I started with them, there was no going back.

Here's another one that I salvaged.  I laid the stamps on the card to see about placement and they evidently had some ink on them.  They left some smudges and dots behind.  So I stamped again on some Decorative Paper, cut them out and glued them over the smudges.  I'm not sure that paper piecing is allowed on One Layer Cards.

I saw a techinque on my friend Vicky's site, Crafting Clare's paper moments, this morning that really helped with these tees.  They were on a jumbo wheel and I never could get them to stamp the way I wanted them to.  Vicky "whacked" her In Stitches wheel (from the Occasions Mini) to make separate stamps. This technique worked beautifully for these little tees and I'm sure I will use them a lot more now.  It's a great bargain too.  I got 5 stamps from an $8.50 wheel!

Vicky gives step by step instructions for "whacking" the wheels.  I was in too much of a hurry to take pictures along the way, so you really need to go to her blog to see the how to.  While you're there, take a look around.  She has a wonderful style and I'm never disappointed when I visit her.   I got the idea for piercing the clothesline and hanging chains from Vicky too.  A big thanks Vicky!

Edited to add: After stamping the letters with Whisper White, I heat embossed with Clear EP.  I punched a 1 1/4" & 1" hole in some scrap paper to use as a mask and sponged the color around the letters.

I think I'll take this over to the Less is More challenge too since it's an embossed, one layer card.

Everyone's Gift

The CAS challenge at SCS this week is Word Inspiration; GIFT.

I immediately thought of this sentiment in the Every Moment set.

And when I was looking for a stamp set to use for the SCS Color Challenge, Rich Razzleberry, Very Vanilla, & Regal Rose, the Pocket Silhouettes caught my attention and just wouldn't let go.  I even got a butterfly in there for the dessert.

Less is More Embossing

The Less is More challenge this week is to do a one layer card with EMBOSSING.  It can be heat or dry embossing.

I bought a stamp last month that is not Stampin'  Up!  (gasp).  I saw a card at a local craft store that was made using this stamp and I just couldn't resist. 

Here it is on a one layer card.

This is a background stamp.  I stamped it with VersaMark and embossed with black.  Then I went in and colored the flowers with markers.

I did some scoring to frame the image.

This was the third try!  Heat embossing is a BIG challenge!

Here's what I did with one of the cast offs...

I did one with white embossing too.  Again, not a one layer card but still Clean and Simple.

I'm Back

We took a few days off last week and went to the beach and to visit family.  It was a wonderful change of scenery.  Even though it wasn't good beach weather, we managed to get a bit of sun, a couple of walks on the beach and a beautiful sunrise each morning.  Then we had a long overdue visit with my in-laws.  I always enjoy their company and we so seldom get a chance to get together.

As soon as I got back I had to check a couple of my favorite challenges.  I got to work this morning on them, but I believe my mojo is still at the beach!  Hopefully it will return soon.  Meanwhile here's the card I did for the One Layer Wednesday challenge that Jennifer is hosting this week.

I was real excited when I saw that the challenge was to  Make a one-layer “New Home” card using at least two colours of ink.  We will be closing on our new home soon and I had copied the picture from the web to do cards letting folks know of our new address.  I hadn't exactly planned on it being a one layer card though!

I used the computer to add the picture and sentiment on a card.  I drew the frame around everything with a ruler and black Stamp n' Write marker.  It looked kind of bare and machine made and needed some stamping with 2 colors of ink.  So I got out the Just Believe stamp set and inked just the foliage from one of the frame stamps to make a semi wreath around the house.

This is probably not what I'll be sending out.  That partial inking takes too long to mass produce!  Besides, I probably couldn't draw a frame that straight again.   I'll come up with more ideas before I'm finished, I'm sure.

Playing with Butterflies

I tried something new with the butterfly in the Strength & Hope set.  Well new to me anyway.  I haven't seen this done yet but I'm sure someone out there has thought of it too.

I stamped the butterflies with VersaMark on different colors of card stock, sprinkled with black embossing powder and heated them up.  I love the colors showing through and it's easier than embossing then painting these dainty creatures!

Then, of course, I had to cut them out.

I had a hard time getting a photo of this.  For some reason all the pictures were blurred or else they were so shiny that you coundn't see any detail.  They're not the best pictures, but hopefully you can get the idea.

I'm going to enter it in these challenges.....

White on White

The Less is More challenge this week is

WHITE ON WHITE

You will have come across this before, but we want to stress we do mean WHITE on WHITE, no

coloured images or additions, with the exception of outlines!

I'd always admired the white on white cards I'd seen but never tried it.  One thing I learned is that it takes a lot of texture to make it work.

Here's card #1...              

My oldest grandson is being confirmed tomorrow and I wanted to make him a special card to commemorate the occasion.  He's always so sweet and appreciative when I make him a card.  I hope it will help him to always remember how important this day is in his life and how proud we are of him.
 

I used 2 shades of white; Naturals White and Whisper White. I really like the 2 shades of white together and the Naturals gives it a more masculine look I think.

 

The cross is made from the Lattice Bigz die and the background is embossed with my favorite Square Lattice Embossing Folder.

 

White on white seems so perfect for wedding or anniversary cards and the hydrangea seemed a good image in white.  The real challenge came in when I had to figure what to do with the stem.  I stamped the flower from the Because I Care set and let the ink dry.  Then I used a stylus to press the stem, leaves and outline of the flower.  (Actually I used more than one stylus but I don't know what the plural is and I'm too lazy to get the dictionary and look it up right now.)  Then I turned it over and glued flowers, punched with the Itty, Bitty Shapes punch, inside the outline of the flower head.

I added pearls to give it some more texture and depth.  Actually, this card is More is More for me.  I've never used that many pearls on one card!  I'll definitely have to hand it and not mail it!  It just so happens that one of our daughters has an anniversary coming up.  She used hydrangeas in her wedding so I think this will be a perfect card for this occasion.

Looking at it now, I think I might round the bottom corners.  If I don't forget....

Featuring Susan

This week's Feature Stamper at SCS is lateblossom aka Susan who started the One Layer Wednesday challenge.  I have been a fan of her Clean & Simple style for some time and was so excited to see that she was being honored!   I used this card of Susan's as inspiration for this piece...

A while back Susan blogged about having so much colored card stock and especially all the shades of yellow.  I too have lots of yellow.  I love it, but for some reason don't use it that much.  But this time I went all out with the So Saffron.  I thought it went really well with this design.

By the way, I'm not sure what kind of bird this is supposed to be.  He doesn't look like the right shape for a chickadee or goldfinch, but a goldfinch he is.....this time!

Circle the Globe

I have yet another post today.  This one is for the One Layer Wednesday challenge at Simplicity.  It's been a year since Susan started this challenge and it's one of my favorites.  One layer cards are not easy, but the satisfaction of completing one and knowing that it can be mailed easily is a sure winner. 

For me anyway.

OLW52 Rules

1. A one-layer card is defined as a single layer of cardstock folded in half...no other layers allowed.

2. Use a circle or circles on your card. Get as creative as you like! And remember to keep embellishments to a minimum.

3. Post your card somewhere online and link back to it using the InLinkz button on the sidebar of Simplicity.

4. The most important rule of all: HAVE FUN!!!!

And Susan even gave some good suggestions of things that could be considered circles.  For those of us who were  wondering what in the world we were going to do!

You can get really creative with this. For instance, the centers of some flowers are circles, brads are circles, pierced holes are circles. All those would count. Or you can make a round card, punch a round window into a card, or accent your card with bit of polka-dot ribbon. I'll bet y'all can think of LOTS more creative ways to incorporate circles into a ONE-LAYER card.

And I just happened to have a brand new set that had a circle in it!  Whoo hoo!

It's a pretty simple card, but this was the 4th try!   I really messed up the first one with a circle nestie frame.  It was too many circles!  The second one had an unwanted line near the sentiment.  The third was way off center.  I told you that one layer cards aren't easy!

I scored all four sides.  The camera would only pick up the three.

After stamping the globe in Chocolate Chip, I rubbed some Bashful Blue Stampin' Pastel with a sponge dauber.  Somehow it looks more like a globe with the blue.

I've made another card for Susan.  She was chosen at SCS as the Featured Stamper this week.  I love a chance to CASE a great stamper!  I'll show you that one tomorrow.

For the Queen

The Queen for the Day at SCS last Friday was Anne, aka jdmommy.  Anne likes red, so put your sunglasses on...

I used this card as inspiration.  I changed the colors, used a rectangle instead of the Nesties die that I wish I had, and used a different stamp.

The Flowers and the Bees

The song lyrics, "The birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees, the moon up above, and a thiing called love", have been running through my head since I saw this challenge at The Paper Players on Sunday. Leanne called the challenge to "Create a card or project using birds, bees, flowers and/or trees."

You may recognize these colors from the card I posted last night.  They are from the SCS Color Challenge321 to use Basic Black, Cherry Cobbler & Crumb Cake.  Dessert option was to add something shiny or glittery.  After stamping  the flower petals, I did some highlighting with my Cherry Cobbler marker, went over the petals with the VersaMark pen and clear embossed.  They look and feel silky. Maybe if you click on the picture, you can see more detail.

More Strength and Hope

I had computer problems yesterday that brought me to a grinding halt as far as posting was concerned.  I think I have things worked out, but it took hours!

I was so happy that I could post a card today.  Then Luke had other ideas and I ended up pushing a truck with him for a while.  The days just aren't quite long enough!  But he will be grown and I'll be glad that I took the time to push a truck with him.  Besides, he gives great, sloppy 3 yr. old hugs!

I used the colors from the Color Challenge at SCS this week, Black Cherry Crumbs.  In other words, Cherry Cobbler, Crumb Cake, Black and Ivory or White for the neutral.

Sail Away

Stampin' Up!'s new Summer Mini Catalog went live on Sunday.  There are some awesome stamps and sets in this catalog!  This card uses the Sail Away stamp.  It's an a la CARTE stamp.

The CAS challenge at Splitcoaststampers this week is a color challenge.  The colors are Chocolate, Sand , Baby Blue & White.

I was really stumped.  I tried and tried to make a baby thank you card and it just wasn't working out.

Then I realized that these colors were perfect for this new sailboat stamp.  I inked the stamp with markers, stamped, then sponged some blue for water & sky.  It only took a few minutes to do this card!

Ink:  Baja Blue, Blushing Blue, SU Markers (Crumb Cake, Chocolate Chip, Marina Mist)
Paper:  Chocolate chip, Whisper White, Sahara Sand
Accessories:  Big Shot, Square Lattice EF, Hemp Twine, Wooden beads from misc. stash

Note:  I tried using my Sahara Sand marker but it was coloring in a greenish tint. Hence the Crumb Cake.  Still sandy.
