Memorial Day

Hi.  Welcome to my blog.

Today we celebrate Memorial Day.

This is a Power Poppy Digital image.  I've loosely colored it with my Zigs
and lots of water.

WHY IS THE POPPY A SYMBOL OF MEMORIAL DAY?

In the war-torn battlefields of Europe, the common red field poppy (Papaver rhoeas) was one of the first plants to reappear. Its seeds scattered in the wind and sat dormant in the ground, only germinating when the ground was disturbed—as it was by the very brutal fighting of World War 1.
John McCrae, a Canadian soldier and physician, witnessed the war first hand and was inspired to write the now-famous poem “In Flanders Fields” in 1915. (See below for the poem.) He saw the poppies scattered throughout the battlefield surrounding his artillery position in Belgium.

“In Flanders Fields”

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The poem you wrote in your post is so poignant. There is also a song about red poppies devoted to Polish soldiers who died during World War II in Italy at Monte Casino. Those hills also bloomed with red poppies and blood. Sad is the history of mankind.
Your card has echoes of such events when the red of your flowers bleed along with water into the area outside the flowers. A poignant card, Bonnie

Oh, Bonnie, thank you for this very touching way to honor Memorial Day. Hubby is a vet and I am eager for him to wake up this morning to show him your post. Your beautiful coloring of the poppy flower and the heartfelt poem reminding us of its significance are spot on. Gonna dig out my poppy stamps soon(!)

Bonnie - such a pretty card. My husband and I went to the Netherlands last spring (2019) and saw where John McCrae wrote this verse. There is a monument of this verse for people to go and visit. Brought back wonderful memories.

I'm agog as I look at your card. The contrast, the simplicity, the textured base, and your absolutely gorgeous coloring of the poppy. Rich and I spent our Memorial weekend evenings watching WWII documentaries on Amazon. There are no words. You'd think WWI would have been enough. Thank you for the poem.

Wow, I love the fiery colour to this gorgeously watercolour bloom. The matting and card base just add to this beauty and the poem gives honour to all who died ...I can see the inpsiration!
