Sparkly Poinsettia

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

There's still time to join in at CAS Mix Up.

Hilary is hosting the challenge and she's asking for us to use Gesso with a stencil
on our CAS cards.

I used a Time Holtz stencil and applied Gesso through it onto a piece of
heavy black cardstock.

It's best to use a light hand with the Gesso and build it up slowly.
Unfortunately I didn't realize that at the time and had some oozing under
the stencil that made for a messy look.

While doing this during a Zoom session, Christine suggested using a
black marker to "clean it up".  It worked really well!
Thanks Christine.

I decided to leave this white instead of coloring over the Gesso and went
for sparkle instead.

I replaced the stencil and sponged some glue over the petals, removed the stencil,
then sprinkled some white glitter over top.  I replaced the stencil and daubed some glue
over the center, removed the stencil and sprinkled gold glitter.

The sentiment has been stamped and heat embossed.

I'm still finding glitter in the studio!

Check out what the rest of the Design team has done and
I hope you'll join us at CAS Mix Up.

Challenges:
CAS Mix Up - Stencil using Gesso
CAS Christmas - Sparkle and/or Shine
Flower Challenge - Add Sparkle (Flower must be main image)
NBUS - Never Before Used Schtuff (Stencil)

Card Recipe
Stamps:  Scribbly Christmas (TH)
Ink:   Whisper White
Paper:   Black Licorice (MFT)
Other:  Gesso, Glitter

Enjoy!

Fading Flowers Gesso for CAS Mix Up

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

It's time for a new challenge at CAS Mix Up.

This month we're doing mixed media and Hilary is hosting the challenge.
She chose....

There are so many ways to use gesso and Hilary has found some fantastic
videos to help us with those techniques.  You can check them out at the challenge site.

I chose to do Gesso Resist using Eileen Godwin's video tutorial.

I used a NBUS stencil that a dear friend sent me for my birthday.
Thank you again, sweet friend.
It's a large stencil so I used a portion of it.

After sponging the gesso through the stencil, I let it dry, then lightly
inked over the whole piece with Distress Ink.

I had tried this technique before and didn't have much success.  This time I paid
closer attention and saw that Eileen used a damp wipe to clean the ink off the gesso.
It made a BIG difference!

I've die cut this sweet bird and watercolored him before placing him
on a branch overseeing the flowers then stamped a sentiment.

It will be perfect to send to one of my birdwatching friends.

I hope you'll check out what our Guest Designer Sue (Cards by Q) and
the rest of the Design Team has done.  I guarantee it's worth the trip!

Now it's your turn.
I hope you'll pull out the gesso and use one of the many techniques on a card.
Then come and share it with us at CAS Mix Up.

Since the stencil is new, I'll take this to Darnell's NBUS challenge.

Challenges:
CAS Mix Up - Stencil with Gesso
NBUS #42 - Never Before Used Schtuff (stencil)

Card Recipe
Stamps:  Bouquet of Thanks (SSS)
Ink:   Versafine Onyx Black, Saltwater Taffy, Speckled Egg, Squeezed Lemonade (DI - for ink blending the background), Tattered Rose, Pumice Shtone, Black Soot (DI - for watercolor on bird)
Paper:   Neenah Solar White, Watercolor (Arches Cold Press)
Other:  Fading Florals Stencil (SSS), Gesso, Layered Chickadee Die (SSS), Woodland Branch Die (MB)

More Dragonflies

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

This stenciled dragonfly background was in my UFO box.

I'd used VersaMark through the stencil, removed the stencil,
then sprinkled a sparkly embossing powder over the top and heat embossed.

The die cut dragonfly is from a Memory Box Corner die.  It was easy to snip
him away from the grasses.  I smacked him into the embossing pad (don't
worry, I did it quite gently) and heat embossed him with the same powder.
I gave him another coat for good measure.

The cattails die is unnamed.  It was a gift from a sweet friend.

I've done a lot to empty that UFO box.  Unfortunately the UFOs seem
to be multiplying!  Do you have that problem too?

Challenges:
Snippets Playground #434 - (Used a snippet of white cardstock for the die cut dragonfly)

Card Recipe
Stamps:
Ink:
Paper:   Bermuda Bay, Neenah Solar White
Other:  Dragonfly Stencil (Magenta), Dragonfly Stems Left Die (ret MB), Long Island Teal EP (WOW), Cattails Die (?), Mini Slimline Double Stitched Dies (Kat Scrappiness), Subtle EF (ret SU)

Enjoy!

Going in Circles

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

For my card, I used an alcohol ink lift background and added
stenciling in a similar color along one side and the opposite corner.

I've stamped a simple image to my background and added some glitter to the flower.

The card base is embossed with the Subtle Texture Embossing Folder.
The photo doesn't seem to pick that up.

A twofer....

This time I did some light handed stenciling and finished the card with some die cuts
from my stash and a little stamped hello.

Thinking of You

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

A while back my friend Nance invited me to her house to play with paper glaze.
It's like a pearlescent embossing paste and comes in different colors.  It's so creamy
and goes through a stencil like a dream!

I used Snowdrop White through this leaf stencil.  Long after it had dried, I
lightly sponged some color around it.

I found this piece of alcohol ink in my stash and used that to color this bird.
I love how the design of the ink looks like a wing!

Challenges:
CAS Mix Up - Stencil: Embossing Paste/Gel- (My mixed media are stencil, paper glaze, sponging, die cutting, alcohol ink, splattering and stamping.
Color Hues #43 - Blue & Green

Glass Bead Garden for CAS Mix Up

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

There's still time to use your embossing pastes or gels
and join in at CAS Mix Up.

I've used glass bead gel again...

I used a Tim Holtz stencil and Distress Ink to add color to a piece of Neenah cardstock.
I cleaned the stencil and placed it back over the image and added some
Glass Bead Gel through the stencil with a palette knife.  The gel is clear and the
colors show through beautifully.
(It is important to wash the stencil immediately
after using the gel!)

I learned not to try to cut through the dried image with my Cutterpillar.
The gel stuck to the rotary blade and I had to get it off and clean it.
So a word to the wise, cut your piece before you add the gel!

Our Design Team has created some beautiful cards with pastes and gels
using a variety of techniques.  Do check them out and I hope you'll
join the fun at CAS Mix Up!

Card Recipe
Stamps:  Special Sentiments (PB)
Ink:   Peeled Paint, Worn Lipstick (DI), Versafine Onyx Blac,
Paper:   Neenah Solar White
Other:  Wildflower Stencil (TH), Glass Bead Gel (Golden)

Enjoy!

Boughs of Holly

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

I've been having fun using different pastes and gels with my stencils.

This time I'm adding to my Christmas card stash.

I've used Distress inks through a stencil to get the ivy image.

After the stencil was clean and dried, I placed it back over the design and
spread clear Glass Bead Gel through the stencil with a palette knife.

I carefully removed the stencil and immediately put it in a dish of water
so the gel wouldn't dry on it.

Then came the hard part...no touching until the gel was completely dry.

Since I wanted the card CAS and two is better than one for the
Christmas stash, I cut the design piece apart with some scissors
and place the pieces behind some die cut frames.
(If you use a frame, you don't need to cut straight!)

Here's my twofer....

Crackle Branch for CAS Mix Up

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

We're back at CAS Mix Up!
We've missed you!

Loll is our host this month and this is what she chose...

Our Design Team is rested and ready to inspire you.
And our Guest Designers,
have added some wonderful inspiration too!

To make this card, I smooshed some Distress Oxide ink on my craft mat and
mixed in some Crackle paste. Once the color was mixed in well,
I spread it over a stencil and set it aside to dry.

There was a messy section which led me to do some partial die cutting to
get that out of the way.

I mounted it on foam over a piece of dry embossing.

My mixed media are stencil, crackle paste, dry embossing and stamping.

Now it's your turn.  I hope you'll get out your pastes or gels and your favorite
stencil and have a play.  Then join us at CAS Mix Up.

Card Recipe
Stamps: Happy Snippets (PB)
Ink:   Shaded Spruce (SU), Mowed Lawn (DOX)
Paper:   Neenah Solar White
Other:  Leaves Stencil (SSS), Crackle Paste, Stripes 3D EF (SU)

Enjoy!

In the Pink

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

I'm trying to use up some of the backgrounds I've done through the years.

This background was from our retreat in 2019.

It's well past time to put it on a card, don'tcha think?

The base was swiped with a baby wipe that was saturated with ink.

I used a stencil and embossing paste through the stencil for the flowers.

When I pulled it out for this card, I stamped randomly with a script stamp
with white ink.

After I cut it down, all it needed was a little butterfly on top.

Challenges:
Colorful Options - Pretty Pink

Card Recipe
Stamps:  French Script Background (ret SU)
Ink:   Whisper White
Paper:   Mixed Media, Neenah Solar White, Vellum
Other:  Baby Wipe, Floral Garden Stencil (Magenta), Stencil Paste (?), Moonlight & Kaleidoscope Butterfly Dies (MB)

Enjoy!

Winterberry Merry Christmas

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

It's almost time to start sending out Christmas cards and I still need a few.
So I'm grabbing every chance I get to get in the studio and work on them.
I think I need to work a little faster!

When I saw the Inspired By Challenge photo this week, the candles made me
think of the background I'd done a few weeks ago with Paper Glaze and a stencil.
The white glaze puts me in mind of a candle.

So I die cut a berry branch from mixed media paper, my Distress Markers and waterbrush
and colored it up.

Challenges:
Inspired By Challenge #196 - Christmas Splendor
