Batik with Group of Seven

Hi there.  I'm so glad you stopped by!

The Group of Seven has used a Batik technique for our cards this month.

On 80 lb. cardstock, I stamped this large flower with embossing ink and heat set
with clear embossing powder. Using a light shade of blue Distress ink, I ink blended over
the embossing.  I folded the card several times vertically and horizontally, using a
bone folder to sharpen the creases. Then I smoothed it out again on the back side.

Back to the front, I ink blended a darker shade of blue Distress ink.  When the creases
weren't showing up as well as I wanted, I folded it to the back along the
creases and added more ink along the creases on the front.  A finger dauber
worked better for this. Make sense?

I wanted a little more interest in the background so I stamped the flower with
a dark blue ink over the embossing.  I had so much ink on the white embossing that
it wouldn't rub off with a paper towel so I used a baby wipe to clean it up.
It was like magic!

Then I tried a different technique...

This time I stamped some leaves on 80 lb. cardstock with a light green ink and blended
over it lightly with the same color ink.  Then I stamped with embossing ink and heat set
with clear embossing powder and blended a medium green ink over top. (Let the embossing
cool before doing this.)  I stamped some more leaves with dark green ink in a few places.

Then came the creasing as on the first card and adding dark green ink to bring out
those fold line.

To finish it off, I stamped some leaves and heat set with white embossing powder.

I cut the piece in two to get a second card.

There is a link to a video tutorial on the Group of Seven blog and my creative
friends have more cards made with the batik technique for your inspiration.
There's also a linky if you want to try this technique and link it up with us.
We love to see what worked, and didn't work, for you.

Three beautiful designs here Bonnie - I love the first one and need to go back up and read exactly how it was made - but the next two are also lovely with the stampings and embossings! Julia xx

Wow, what a fun technique! You got some fabulous results too, Bonnie. They all look amazing, but the first is my favorite!

They all worked brilliantly Bonnie, and I love the extra bits of stamping that you added to the backgrounds for more interest, and the colour added to the embossing and also the white embossed extra leaves give a lovely finished look, and a great idea to cut one in two to make the extra card with a pretty added bird on it too to make three beautiful cards! x

All three cards are so beautiful, Bonnie. Great work with this technique!! Love the contrast with your first card. The white with the deep blue really pops! And the mix of stamps that you've used with your second/third cards is so beautiful with the deep green and blue. Gorgeous!! xx

OMG! You're absolutely right that it's magic! I love the blue card, the folds that take more ink and that amazing stamp that creates the shadow! WOW! I also love both green cards. They're beautiful too, the batik technique gives such beautiful effects.

Your cards turned out so well, Bonnie. My favourite is the first one - love the blue and white. Great effect to add the dark blue stamping. The other two are so striking in that dark green. Well done on all three!

The technique on the first card is reminiscent of Japanese shibori which uses indigo and a tie dye method. All three cards are so artsy--it must have been fun to get inky on papers!

I love how you played with this and came up with such awesome cards. The blue card really shows the folds so well and the white pops against the blue. Going over the green stamped ink with the same color then embossing and using the green ink again gave the softest color.

Simply beautiful, and a cool technique! I can melt right into the green. It's equally pretty with the large sentiment or bird. I love how you used the PB brushstroke stamp for the emboss resist silhouette on the first. I'll have to remember to make better use of my baby wipes!

Using the darker ink on the creases has worked so well. It adds so much interest to your lovely cards xx

You had great images to use for this technique, Bonnie. The dark creases add so much to the card as do the white heat embossing and darker stamping.

Three amazing cards with this technique. Your results are wonderful on each one. Love them all but, like Michele, the blue one is my favorite. Have a great weekend my friend.

I don't remember ever doing this technique, but I'm intrigued. I love the moodiness of the colors and images you used and you got such great crease lines, Bon! Hugs, Dolly

I am trying my best to catch up with your posts -- this technique looks very artsy - love it. My favorite card is the green Happy Birthday card.
