It's time to share what the Group of Seven Cardmakers has been up to this month.
This time we followed this video by Devid Roodinburg.
Devid did a background using water and re-inkers. I was lazy and pulled a background
colored with Brushos that was very bright.
Then we inked the flat side of an embossing folder with pigment ink.
This is where I had a problem. I was skeptical of putting ink on my embossing folder;
especially black ink! But I gave it a try. The video suggested Versafine Clair ink. I don't
have that in black so I used my Versafine Onyx black, put my colored background in, and
ran it through. I didn't have good coverage on the paper so I inked and ran it through again.
I may not have got it lined up perfectly because it looked a little off when I
took it out. The background was still splotchy too.
Then I cleaned the folder with hand sanitizer.
Then I cleaned with 91% alcohol.
And again with the alcohol.
Then gave it a good soak in soapy water.
I'm glad I didn't use my favorite embossing folder because it still has a grayish
cast to it that transfers to white cardstock.
Devid added a step of swiping with VersaMark and adding some gold embossing powder.
Since I wasn't crazy about my results I figured I'd give it a go.
I do like it better now. And I used a black Sharpie around the flowers to
get rid of the splotchiness in the background.
I tried it again and took a photo before I added gold embossing powder.
I didn't like how some of the leaves are black but I think that's more due to
the embossing folder.
I made a card from it, but I'm not at all happy with it, but I thought I'd
share it anyway.
The rest of the Group of Seven Cardmakers had fantastic results. Do go and see
what they did and what worked for them. They had much better luck than I did!

I have made a card something like this but using a sharpie/black Copic marker to make the background black ... I'll have to watch that video, Bonnie!
All three of your cards show your dedication to your Group - all pretty - card two without the embossing is my favorite today!

Hi Bonnie. Even though this is not a technique for you, I absolutely LOVE your first card. It looks AMAZING, my friend. The gold embossing really added some lovely shine and I'm sorry I didn't try that with any of my cards. I had some staining of embossing folders, but it depended on the brand. I used nail polish remover (wearing gloves, with the window wide open ... and then washing right away in hot soapy water). It worked, but I don't like dealing with those harsh chemicals. I had tried Verafine Onyx ink, but it didn't give me great coverage. I tried Black Memento (my favourite black ink for stamp), and it didn't work either. Embarrassed to say I still have a couple of black inks to try in my stash. :) We card makers do love our black inks. :) Versafine Clair worked for me, but I did run some of my card fronts through a couple of times to get it solid black. xx
The best part of the Group of Seven techniques is that we are all drawn to different ones and even though this technique wasn't for you your first card is a stunner. Now I wish I'd tried adding a little gold embossing to mine. ♥
Supplies used definitely change how things come out - you sure gave it a good try and your cards are beautiful! I didn't try the gold embossing bit and it looks wonderful on both of your creations! Great idea using a already made Brusho background! Julia xx

My jaw dropped when I saw your first card, Bonnie. It is stunning with all the gold. I tried this technique using Distress Inks and I used Altenew Graphite for the black and it came out fine although not as dark. That card is coming up in a challenge this weekend.

Your first card is really stunning. I love the gold shine. Both cards look great to me. It is always fun to try new techniques, but I am not sure if this one is for me either. All the cards by the GO7 are gorgeous though. TFS
Although not your technique for repeating, your results are pretty and colorful! I do love the touch of gold embossing added, it always adds so much class. As for me? Probably not if it was that messy for you -- I'm kind of a stickler for too much mess...

I think both cards came out beautifully Bonnie...in fact I think both are STUNNING! They both are so dramatic looking and I just love the gold in the first card and the copper look in the 2nd! Maybe it's more that you're usually drawn to the light and airy floral type cards and these were on a darker scale that made you not as happy with them? Always fun to try something new, even if it ends up being a one time only effort. I wouldn't have liked the staining of my embossing folders either and since I use Versafine Black Onyx ink, I don't think I'll be trying this technique, but I sure like looking at everyone's results!! Loved to see how your different variations of the technique turned out and your do's and don'ts:-) Although..I really liked all 3 of your variations..you got sharp and a bit destressed looks, which makes them great for different occasions, etc. Your 1st card was my favorite with all the gold accents and clever, creative framing. WOW! The first card is out of this world beautiful - have to admit - you had to do way too much in making and cleaning up -- I plead lacy on this idea.
I cleaned out my craft room and got rid of half of the stuff - now I have to reduce half of the stuff I kept! Oh woe is me!!!

As others have said, that first card is stunning! Not sure I could even give it away! Interesting technique.. sort of like Joseph's Coat as I recall. I don't have any reinkers, but found I have several Distress Stains, so will finally use them & see if they work! Always like techniques to try!
I don't think you should be despondent about your cards using this technique Bonnie as they are both beautiful and the added gold heat embossing on the first is stunning, and love the added gold frame and gold embossed sentiment on the vellum, and then the added gold leaves on the second. x

Oh goodness, I don't know if I could ink up my embossing folders either, Bonnie! Good for you to push through because your results are wonderful! I like the elegance the gold embossing adds but I think the second card without it is my favorite today!
I just tried this technique for the first time and I'm thrilled with the results! That doesn't usually happen...LOL! Used Versafine Clair Nocturne and since I have no reinkers, I used Distress Stains, which I'd never used...and they worked very well. Did not do the embossing powder as I like what I have, and afraid to ruin it! Next time...maybe. Alcohol cleaned the Altenew ef with no problem. This really is an impressive technique with no a lot of effort...IMHO.

Even though you sound like you weren't very satisfied with the embossed card fronts, you certainly have a knack for turning them into something very beautiful. The gold foil frame, matte, and leaf die-cut additions bring a touch of glitz and glamor to the cards, and the gold heat-embossing provides a striking contrast to the ink colors.

I too had trouble with the idea of putting black ink all over my embossing folders so I only made one sample for the Group of Seven post. Your first card using the brushos background is gorgeous - good to know that brushos work just as well as re-inkers should I ever try the technique again. The bit of gold embossing powder is perfect!
You may not be happy with the results, but it is still striking. Thanks for the heads up as I only have Versafine Onyx Black ink, too.

I hear you about splotches, but that first one looks especially beautiful in the picture. No splotches caught my eye, just the beauty of it. You certainly did a good job of fixing them up. Bummer about the EFs - hope the leftover ink soon dissipates.
Wow on the first card Bonnie, it is stunning! I cam imagine it is scary putting all the black ink on your embossing folder. I'm sorry it messed up your folder. I saw this technique on Brenda W's blog and thought it was so gorgeous and it is! I watch the video and thought I need to have a go. I was going to use my Versafine Onyx Black, but then decided I would order the VF Claire one. So I'm waiting for that to come. I'm glad now after reading your post! But I do love how your first card came out, it really is stunning looking. Your second card is beautiful, but I think I liked it without the gold embossing on it. Love the gold die cut leaves though.
